Time:1:29 pm.
"But don't put too much whipped cream on it. That's not manly." - secondhand horrifying Quote of the Day.

Bornstein's Mythic and Power Dynamic cues in Lord Fanny, Desire, and Wonder Woman. )

And dammit, why am I suddenly playing JE bands and AAA on loop from YouTube, of all places? This should really not be optimal writing music. (Also, dammit, I did not expect to start liking Arashi. Not so hot on NEWS, though.)

However, with JE being so focused on pumping out bands of bishounen, it is deliciously ironic.

Westboro Baptist Church, in typical tasteless style, announced they would be protesting Heath Ledger's funeral. Except there's a teensy, weensy problem.

They don't know where it is.

An Open Letter to the Family of Heath Ledger

"For misguided reasons you are hiding the body of Heath Ledger, and refusing the divulge the time, date, and place of his burial in Perth, Australia, so that we at Westboro Baptist Church cannot attend — in respectful proximity — and conduct a religious service."

"Please tell us the time, date and place of Heath’s funeral in Australia. Thank you."

But don't worry, they're still prepared to save your soul: GodHatesAustralia.com. "This filthy little island in the Pacific is a hotbed of sodomy, child sex tours, and every other abominable thing obnoxious to God."

And BONUS ROUND!: GodHatesAustralia.com: Home of one awesome breakdancing bear and a message to love thy neighbor.

Subject:Free music!
Time:8:16 am.
To commemorate the day of my birth (or not-abortion, given how morbid your sense of humor and/or political affiliation), it's time for the annual music offering. My complete playlist has over 300 hours of music, so if you find there's stuff on it you want, let me know and it may magically appear in your inbox. Note that repeat songs are often live versions, so specify if you want a repeat live or studio.

Subject:It was just a social experiment. Really!
Time:7:48 pm.
Mood:curious.
I'm working as a research intern on a book (at this point proposal) considering the legitimacy of sex addiction as a diagnosis. As part of my prep work, I read (and took) the official Sex Addiction Screening Test. While reading some of the questions ("Do you spend too much time online for sexual purposes?" "Have you regularly purchased romantic novels or sexually explicit magazines?" "Have you spent considerable time surfing pornography online?"), I hit [info]brown_betty with an idea: How would fandom score?

So I task you, IJ, with letting me know. Is fandom a nest of deviants hiding at the Piccadilly Theater talking to their zombie victims? Do we give PeeWee Herman a run for his money?

Numerical scores and/or responses of other possible conditions are very helpful, though clearly you may be as vague and private as you wish. I do ask that you keep your answers as honest as possible, because if the results are interesting enough I may link my boss to this.

And in the interest of full disclosure, I scored a 5 and have "a profile consistent with women who struggle with sexually compulsive behavior," though mostly because I've been single (and without sex) for over a year.

Cross-posted to my LJ and IJ.

EDIT: And to clarify, I would forward it for the sole purpose of shits and giggles. None of this would be actual, legitimate "for use" research.

Subject:The Groovy Thing To Do
Time:12:28 am.
This post has been a week in the making, first percolating in my brain and then taking the entire day to write itself out. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, which is unusual for me. I have done my best to reduce an entire history of exploitation down to less than ten paragraphs, and I am not entire sure I have succeeded in expressing myself. But I feel it's very important to have this discussion and consider certain actions in the context of what came before.

And because I know that not everyone is so deep a music nerd to recognize, say, Muddy Waters at first glance, I have included Wikipedia links to all relevant groups, artists, and terms.

A disclaimer: The racial attitudes and tensions of the Civil Rights era are not the same as those of the queer movement and should never be directly compared and weighed against each other as "better" or worse." I have at times done it and still regret those instances; all exclusions on the basis of othering exist on a spectrum of bad. I worried about my connection between the two concepts here, but I stand by it on the basis of an example of the systematic exploitation of the appeal of the "other" by the music machine, no matter where or how they began.

Blue-eyed soul and stage gay: how much do they have in common, anyway? )

Subject:D*Con
Time:8:06 am.
I am off to D*Con all weekend, crashing with [info]browncoatrebel and [info]katarik. Photos will be had afterward, though I fear my Matches may not be perfectly Matches. If anyone sees a person in a spraypainted jacket and pants (Ryuutaros) or an amazingly tacky suit with puce, orange, and white patterned tie and black fedora (Matches Malone), that's me (or just cargo shorts and geeky shirts). Stop by and say hi!

Also, I may get to fan enthusiastically at Peter A. Beagle. Hah.

Subject:DKR and Moon Knight meta
Time:9:06 pm.
So, I've been all over the map lately. My issues have popped out of the corner and eaten my brain, especially "hai i'm your lifelong undiscussed gender issues. let me try and take you over." I hadn't taken the time to read How not to write a hero, and I almost didn't. But I'm so very glad I did. Te has gotten Miller's Batman perfectly: he is the true Nation, a Nation of embedded, romantic ideals of a time that never really existed. Miller's Batman, as The Nation, doesn't need to think or question itself, because it knows. To deviate from the ideals is to risk giving in, which the weak, the thinkers, the Supermen, the women do.

And on Miller women, it's so nice to see someone point out how scarily unsexed and non-gender-coded Carrie is. Just like how most people can be comfortable with a queer person in media only when he/she/hir is unsexed, Miller can only be comfortable with Robin and Carrie when she is not so much a she as an idea. And when Miller tries to have it both ways, he fails miserably. Women, unable to fully devote themselves to The Nation, are to be mastered and Batman needs one to keep him relevant. Yet Carrie was never an actual sexed person in DKR, which induces a radical, ridiculous speed change of characterization. Because you can't give an idea or concept gender. You can't make an idea into a person.

Why Moon Knight is not only not Batman, he's better. )

In a nutshell, Moon Knight is Miller's DKR/DKSA done right. With a strong, loving, and sensitive gay relationship.

Time:12:04 am.
First off, for the SPN fans )

This next baby took me a good three hours, but it was dearly worth it and I'm very proud of it despite some of the 'shoppiness. Recently, pictures of this book have been making the rounds. Of all things, a children's book that yet again reinforces that vicious lie, "If you don't hug your sons, some other man will." A book about a boy who was sexually molested and 'thought he was gay.'

So much of me wants to scrawl across the artist's wall, "How? How can you do this to children? It's bad enough you convince parents that their children 'had' to have been sexually abused. But children can barely understand some of this, yet you drive them to live in fear that if they don't bond 'correctly' with their fathers, they will 'become' gay."

But I can't. So I did the next best thing: I made it about accepting yourself and becoming a hero. )

Time:5:42 pm.
I will come up with a unique use for this journal at some point. Until then, I've decided to just duplicate entries, but try to add some original content to each one. I don't like that as a solution, but it will have to do.

So, I scored a new HD and DVD burner, which means 111 gigs of awesome space. It also means I can now burn Hibiki for people. This new HD means I had to redo my playlist. As always, if you see anything on it you want, just let me know in a comment.

Real life and LJ have been amazingly depressing and frustrating. Recent events have left me pissed at, pretty much, most of the planet. I'd like to post things about how 6A has never actually cracked open a basic PR textbook, participate in IBARW, but I'm just...exhausted. Really, the only thing I'm emotionally equipped for, at the moment, is fannish squee.

Thus, I have picspam of my recent character obsession, Rio from Gekiranger. Normally, the issue with toku actors is their tendency to overact when they can't act at all (aka Yuichi Nakamura). However, I stand by the theory that Yasuko Kobayashi chose Nakamura for Yuuto because he can't act as the grumpy unliked loner, and neither can Yuuto.

But what I adore about Araki Hirofumi is that his overacting is just right for a character with less dimension than a stack of paper. Everyone else can go on about how badass Rio is, but he'll always be the adorable evil doofus to me. Plus, Araki's totally okay with being genderfuck-y. If for nothing else, he dances adorably in the Prince of Tennis musicals.

Nothing says subtext like your own mobile throne of men to carry you. )

Briefly, my thoughts on Faiz up to 26: Very creepy definition of romantic interaction. Am liking the plot twists. Kusaka, he of the creepy stalker "Mari will be my mother and save me!" and Spider Orpehnoch, with his hip-hop and setting origami animals on fire, have been added to the list of creepy people in Faiz who make me turn from the screen. Smart Brain Lady still tops that list.

Additionally, I have finally seen an episode of Supernatural, the pilot. Sadly it did not ping me, only my blood and guts without werewolves squick. Now dissuaded, I may just settle down and try to get seriously fannish about new Who, though I desperately need to catch up on B5. Anyone want to drag my butt into Who-dom?
